Real Madrid suffered a humiliating loss in the FIFA Club World Cup semifinal by 4-0 defeat to European champions Paris Saint-Germain. While Madrid’s defence was largely in disarray, one bright spot emerged in Eder Militão. Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has reportedly decided on Eder Militão and Dean Huijsen as his centre-back pairing for the upcoming season. The Brazilian centre-back, Eder made his long-awaited return after 242 days on the sidelines due to a cruciate ligament injury, entering the match in the 64th minute. Despite his limited time on the pitch, Militão displayed remarkable defensive composure, winning 67% of his duels, completing 83% of his passes, and notably not being dribbled past even once.

To partner Militão at the back, Alonso views Dean Huijsen as the perfect choice. According to Diario AS, Huijsen made a €50 million switch to Real Madrid from Premier League side Bournemouth in May. However, he was unavailable for the clash against PSG, serving a suspension after receiving a red card in the 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.

Xabi Alonso has full freedom in choosing who should be on the bench

Reports also say that Real Madrid management has given free rein to the boss, Xabi, on choosing which player should be on the bench. Real Madrid’s defeat to PSG meant they concluded the 2024-25 season without securing any trophy. Club president Florentino Perez, however, made it clear about his full backing of Alonso and the new project under his leadership. Following the loss, leading outlet Marca reported concerns over egos within the squad, with plans underway to hold discussions with key players about their commitment. Alonso was appointed as Real Madrid’s new head coach in May, following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure from the role.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso must be mindful of Militão’s troubling injury history, given the Brazilian’s struggles with multiple long-term setbacks. With this in mind, it becomes crucial for the new Real Madrid manager to also groom an alternative option as he works to establish the backbone of his revamped defence.
