India suffered a heart-breaking defeat in the third Test of a five-match Test against England at Lords Cricket Ground on July 14. India gave a tough fight while chasing a target of 193 runs with the help of Ravindra Jadeja’s heroics but bowled out for 170 runs on day 5. With this win, England are now leading the five-match Test series by 2-1. On the other hand, India, who are looking for their first Test series win in England after 2007, now need to win both the remaining Test matches to achieve the feat.

After India’s defeat at Lords, questions have been raised on Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as Head Coach of the Indian Cricket team. Notably, Gambhir took over as Head Coach after the T20 World Cup in 2024. Under his tenure, India have been impressive in the the limited overs cricket but haven’t been able to dominate in the longest format so far. With Gambhir as head coach, India are the number T20I side in the world and also ended up winning the Champions Trophy in 2025. However, India’s Test records under Head coach Gambhir have been concerning in the past one year.

India’s Test records under Head Coach Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir first Test assignment as Head Coach was in the home Test series against Bangladesh in September - October in 2024. It wasn’t a big deal for India as they ended up winning the two-match Test series by 2--0. At this point, India were also at the top of the points table in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle and were favourites to qualify for the final. However, things changed when New Zealand toured India for a three-match Test series in October 2024.

India not only lost a Test series at home after 2012, but it was also the first time in the history that India suffered a whitewash in a home Test series. New Zealand ended up winning the series by 3-0. After that, India also failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time after 2014-15 as Australia clinched the five-match Test series by 3-1. India also missed a chance to win their third consecutive Test series down under and also lost a spot in the WTC final.
