In the main event of Saturday Night’s Main Event (SNME), Hall of Famer Goldberg retired from WWE after losing to Gunther in a World Heavyweight Championship match at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. In front of his family, friends, and thousands of fans in his adopted home town, Goldberg, who is 58 years of age, put up a valiant fight against Gunther, but it wasn’t enough as he got choked out by the reigning champion.
After announcing a few months ago that he will hang up his boots as an active in-ring performer in WWE with a retirement match in 2025, Goldberg challenged World Heavyweight champion Gunther for the title. WWE SNME, an NBC primetime special, in his adopted home of Atlanta was chosen as the event for the big clash, and Goldberg made his way to the ring in front of everyone in his trademark style, walking with a purpose from his locker room in the backstage area.
Goldberg thanked his family and friends before telling fans that he loves them
The retirement match was a slow burner with Gunther wearing down Goldberg with his mat skills, not allowing the challenger to build-up the pace, especially in the early goings. At one stage of the match, when the two superstars went outside the ring, Goldberg tried to spear Gunther through the barricade, but the champion managed to escape the predicament before the challenger went through it instead.
After Goldberg got his wits about himself, he put himself in a position to spear Gunther, but the champion got out of the way just in time, but it led to the referee Charles Robinson eating the move. Moments later, the distraction from his son Gage allowed Goldberg to spear Gunther and hit him with a Jackhammer, but with a new referee arriving a bit late to the scene along with the late cover from the Hall of Famer, the champion stayed alive in the contest.
Ultimately, Gunther found a way to neutralise Goldberg, put him in a sleeper hold to choke him out and end his in-ring WWE career in the process with a defeat to his name. In the immediate aftermath of his retirement match at SNME, Goldberg had his family and friends gather inside the ring while the chants of “Thank You Goldberg” echoed inside the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
Moments later, WWE commentator Michael Cole made his way inside the ring before giving the live mic to Goldberg, and he thanked his family and friends before telling the fans that he loves them before telling him that he couldn’t have done it without them.
