With the Indian cricket team’s limited-overs tour to Bangladesh next month off the table, Rohit Sharma will not get to play any ODI match before the much awaited Australian limited-overs tour in October-November. Rohit has an impeccable record in the 50-over format both as a batsman and a captain, with the recent Champions Trophy title under his name. In ODIs, even if he struggled with scoring runs at times, his pragmatic leadership resulted in the Indian cricket team clinching trophies. With the ODI World Cup 2027 fast coming on the horizon, the Indian legend might aim to maintain his form and fitness to play the long white-ball format.
Amid all this, another speculation is spreading fast that Shubman Gill is likely to replace Rohit Sharma as captain in the ODI format. Many reports claim that the 25-year-old’s could be the successor to Rohit in the 50 overs cricket. Post the retirement of Rohit from Test cricket, Shubman Gill is the captain of the Indian Test side. In his second match as captain, he led the team to its biggest overseas win by runs in the Test match against England at Edgbaston. Sports journalist Rohit Juglan’s post regarding this speculation is getting viral on X.
Reports claim that Shreyas Iyer is also considered for ODI captaincy
Shubman Gill has established himself in the ODIs before proving his mettle in Test cricket. In the 50-overs white-ball format, he opens the batting with Rohit Sharma. In two of the big tournaments as opener, he scored 354 runs in ODI World Cup 2023 and 188 runs from five outings in Champions Trophy 2025. Reportedly, the other option that is touted for ODI captaincy is Shreyas Iyer, who is cemented at the number four batting spot in the ODI team.
Iyer’s captaincy stint with Punjab Kings in the IPL one of the best, and he is dependable with the bat too in the one days. Shreyas was seventh highest run maker (530) in ODI World Cup 2023 and was second highest in the Champions Trophy 2025. The ODI captaincy question and the to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli making a comeback post their Test retirement are uncertain for now. But, if they want their place in the side for the ODI World Cup 2027, they need to be at the top of their game in whatever number of ODI fixtures available.
