In a tragic turn of events, Diogo Jota, the Liverpool and Portugal forward, died in a car crash on Thursday, July 3, at around 12:30 AM local time. The 28-year-old was involved in an accident along with his brother Andre Silva - a professional player in Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel - in the Spanish province of Zamora, who also passed away at the scene.
As per the report published in BBC Sport, the details about the accident were revealed to them by the Guardia Civil wherein the Lamborghini car went off the road due to a tyre blow-out in an attempt to overtake another vehicle before catching fire. It was in a ceremony on June 22 when Diogo Jota had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.

Notably, Diogo Jota was part of Liverpool’s Premier League title glory at the end of last season apart from winning the UEFA Nations League final with Portugal last month after defeating Spain. Pedro Proenca, the head of the Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) said the following in his statement about the tragic turn of events, “The Portuguese Football Federation (FPT) and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated,” said Pedro Proenca, head of the FPT.
“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself,” he added.
Liverpool have just released a statement on their player’s passing, which read, “The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
