Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian fast bowler, one of the best in the world, took a five-wicket haul in the first Test of the five-match series against England at Headingley in Leeds. After the 31-year-old got to his 14th five-wicket haul in his 46th Test match, Sunil Gavaskar, who is working for Sony Sports Network at the venue, hailed the pacer by saying that “India is blessed to have Jasprit Bumrah playing for them”.

The gulf between Jasprit Bumrah and his three fast bowler teammates, namely Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur, was staggering during England’s first innings. Not only did the Gujarat-born pacer not only didn’t allow the English batters to have positive intent against him, but also troubled them with the new and old ball right throughout, playing a key role in bowling them out for 465 runs in 100.4 overs in response to India’s first innings total of 471 runs.

After taking the wicket of Zak Crawley in the first over of England innings, he got the big wickets of Ben Duckett and Joe Root in quick succession, missing out on taking the scalp of Harry Brook for duck due to an untimely no-ball. There were three genuine chances dropped on his bowling before he returned for one late spell, cleaning up Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue in back-to-back overs to get to a yet another five-wicket haul in his Test career.

Below are the playing XIs of England and India for the first Test at Headingley in Leeds:
