On Sunday, June 22, the day three of the first Test in the five-match series between India and England belonged to Jasprit Bumrah, who took his 14th five-wicket haul to help the visitors take a slender first innings lead of six runs at Headingley in Leeds. In their second innings, India batted 23.5 overs before stumps were called early due to rain, and during that time, they reached 90/2 with KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill at the crease.
The day three began with England on 209/3 in 50 overs with Ollie Pope (100*) and Harry Brook (0*) at the crease, but the centurion from yesterday didn’t stay at the crease for long as Prasidh Krishna dismissed him, getting the right-hander caught behind through to Rishabh Pant. England captain Ben Stokes played a measured innings of 20 off 52, sharing a 51-run stand for the fifth wicket with Harry Brook, who was getting into his own with the bat despite getting a couple of lives from Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
He shared a 73-run stand for the sixth wicket with Jamie Smith, who scored a quick-fire 40 off 52 before getting caught at deep square leg where Ravindra Jadeja gave a big assist to Sai Sudharsan in taking a boundary rope catch on the bowling of Prasidh Krishna. It led to Harry Brook keeping the momentum going of England first innings alongside Chris Woakes before getting caught at deep fine leg region on a short delivery from Prasidh Krishna while trying to hook him for a maximum to go past 99 runs, which were scored in just 112 balls with 11 fours and two sixes.
Chris Woakes (38 off 55) and Brydon Carse (22 off 23) shared a valuable eighth wicket partnership of 55 runs to bring England within touching distance of India’s first innings total of 471 runs. Jasprit Bumrah managed to clean up the final two wickets of England innings, to take yet another five-wicket haul in his career, ensuring that India weren’t behind the game in the first innings.
In the second innings, which began in the third session on day three, India lost the big wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal early for four runs, who was caught behind on the bowling of Brydon Carse, with wicketkeeper Jamie Smith taking a simple catch. Sai Sudharsan walked out to bat at number three, and after getting off the pair in his debut Test, he looked increasingly confident in his innings under the guidance of stalwart KL Rahul.
Rahul and Sudharsan shared a 66-run stand for the second wicket before the latter fell into the leg side trap of Ben Stokes once again, chipping the ball straight to Zak Crawley at short mid-wicket for 30 off 48. Just a few minutes later, as the rain arrived at Headingley in Leeds, the play was called off for the third day, but at that time, India reached 90/2 with KL Rahul (47* off 75) and Shubman Gill (6* off 10) still at the crease.
