Team India have taken 180-run lead after the first innings of the second Test, getting played at Edgbaston. Mohammed Siraj played an instrumental role in helping India gain the lead as he spearheaded the team’s fast-bowling attack from the front in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. After winning his battle against Zak Crawley on the second day, he got the better of dangerous Joe Root and Ben Stokes in the first hour of day three. Root was looking to settle at the crease but Siraj pushed him towards the leg side and got the veteran caught at the hands of wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant. After Root’s departure, he struck England skipper Ben Stokes in the next delivery.
After delivering back-to-back blows to the English side, Siraj cleaned up England’s tail. After the fall of England’s seven wickets, India were looking to end England’s first innings as soon as possible and Siraj stepped up and hunted the scalps of Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir. England’s innings ended at a score of 407 and they lost their five wickets in 20 runs. With this performance, Siraj bagged his second six-wicket haul in Tests as the speedster concluded his fiery spell with 6/70 figures in 19.3 overs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal falls against Josh Tongue as India put 244-run lead
In the second innings, India got a rapid start from their openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul. Jaiswal was amassing runs at a swift pace but while attempting to score briskly, he became the victim of Josh Tongue, who trapped him in front of the wickets. Both Jaiswal and Rahul built a 51-run stand off just 46 balls.
In the innings, when Jaiswal scored his 11th run, he crossed the 2000-run mark in his Test career. After the left-handed batter’s departure, Karun Nair has joined Rahul in the middle. After failing to be effective in the first innings, Nair will look to play an impactful knock from his bat, this time.
