On July 6, 2019, Team India opener Rohit Sharma entered the record books after hitting his 27th One-Day International (ODI) century, which came against Sri Lanka in the Cricket World Cup 2019 game played at Headingley, Leeds. Rohit, who had already racked up four centuries in the tournament, continued his sensational form and played a 103-run knock off just 94 balls. His innings was studded with 16 boundaries (14 fours and two maximums). With his magnificent fifth century in the competition, he shattered Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara’s record of most tons (4) in a Cricket World Cup installment. Sangakkara claimed the feat in the 2015 World Cup, played in Australia and New Zealand.

In the game, India entered with confidence as they already qualified for the knockout after bagging six victories in eight outings. On the other hand, Sri Lanka were playing for pride as they were looking to end their campaign on a positive note after getting ruled out of the semi-final race. At the toss, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne emerged victorious and elected to bat first. Riding on veteran Angelo Mathews’ 113 (128) and Lahiru Thirimanne’s 53 (68), Sri Lanka posted a fine total of 264/7 in their 50 overs.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul guided India to a dominating win

Chasing the target, Team India openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave a ferocious start to the side. Both stitched a 189-run stand for the opening wicket. Rohit departed after scoring his 27th century but Rahul, along with Virat Kohli, built a 55-run partnership for the second wicket.

Rahul followed Rohit to the pavilion after scoring 111 off 118. He accumulated 50 runs from the boundary with 11 fours and a six. Kohli stayed at the crease until the end and took the team home in 43.3 overs with his unbeaten 34-run innings. Rohit Sharma got the Player of the Match (POTM) award for his stunning innings in India’s comprehensive seven-wicket triumph.
