Zimbabwe is currently hosting the world Test champions, South Africa in a two-match Test series. With the first Test currently underway at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, the hosts have been handed a major blow. On day two of the ongoing Test, the Craig Ervine-led side saw their 21-year-old Brian Bennett get hit on the helmet, which led to his withdrawal from the ongoing match.

Bennett was hit on the helmet by a bouncer from South African pacer Kwena Maphaka. Batting at 19, the 21-year-old opener, attempted a pull shot off Maphaka’s ball in the sixth over. The delivery hit him on the helmet after getting a top edge. Although, the Zimbabwean passed the on-field concussion test, but seemed visibly uneasy and was forced to retire hurt.

Bennett could extend his stay in the middle for another three balls after getting hit and forced to make his way off the field. Later in the day, Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed the diagnosis of a mild concussion, while announcing his replacement for the remainder of the first Test.

"Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett will play no further part in the ongoing Test match against South Africa at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo after being diagnosed with a mild concussion. As per concussion protocols, he will take no further part in the match. Prince Masvaure has been named as his replacement, making his 10th appearance in Test cricket," the release stated.

Masvaure will make his return in the Test setup after being named the replacement after July 2024. Although, it will be his 10th Test appearance, he was last seen in action in a match against Ireland, where he scored a half-century.

Speaking of the ongoing Test, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, South Africa posted 418 runs on the board, courtesy a 153 off 160 from Lhuan-dre Pretorious and an unbeaten 100 from Corbin Bosch, before declaring the innings.They then bundled out the hosts at 251 in 67.4 overs with Wiaan Mulder picking a four-fer and Codi Yusuf and Keshav maharaj picking three wickets each, taking a 167-run lead. They have so far taken a lead of 216 runs at stumps on day two with Tony de Zorzi (22* off 25) and Wiaan Mulder (25* off 47) in the middle.
