Shubman Gill has exuded confidence with his bat while playing his maiden game as India Test captain against England in the first match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley in Leeds. Batting first after losing the toss, India openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul played quality cricket and gave a tough time to the hosts’ bowling unit. However, Rahul lost his control in the 25th over and became the victim of Brydon Carse. The veteran went back to the dugout after scoring only 42 off 78.

Following his departure, India lost Sai Sudharsan the next over as the debutant couldn’t open his account after playing four balls in the innings. After the fall of two quick wickets, skipper Shubman came at the crease and produced some exquisite strokes from his bat.

Playing his maiden game as India Test captain, he stood tall against bowlers and completed his eighth Test fifty in just 56 balls. The 25-year-old, along with Yashasvi, has stitched a 123-run stand for the third wicket until the tea break.

India aiming to post above 300 runs after the first day’s play at Headingley

India will look to put up more than 300 runs on the board without losing many wickets after the first day’s play. As of writing, Shubman Gill is batting at an unbeaten 58 off 74, while Yashasvi has struck his fifth Test hundred. This is the left-handed opener’s fourth red-ball ton against the English side.

Prior to this game, Jaiswal’s Test average against England was 101.50. Following this sensational knock, it is expected to get even better now. Both youngsters will look to take the team ahead confidently after settling down in the middle. Until the tea break, India are 215/2 in 51 overs. For England, Brydon Carse and Ben Stokes have bagged one wicket apiece.
