After putting up a brilliant show with the bat, Team India was surrounded by questions due to instances of poor fielding on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test at Headingley, Leeds. With centuries coming from the bat of Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), skipper Shubman Gill (147) and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant (134), the visitors grabbed attention after their lackadaisical approach on the field.
Although, India could have restricted England if they took the easy catches on the field. Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal first dropped Ben Duckett in the fifth over. The England batter was once again dropped in the seventh over, but this time by Ravindra Jadeja at backward point. Furthermore, Ollie Pope, who currently bats at 100*, was also dropped at third slip by Jaiswal.
Really very, very disappointing: Sunil Gavaskar on Team India's dropped catches on day 2 of first Test
Seeing two dropped catches from Jaiswal and one from Ravindra Jadeja, former India cricketer and legend, Sunil Gavaskar was left disappointed. The great of the game slammed the Indian team for making such mistakes despite putting a great show with the bat. Speaking during his commentary stint on Day 2, Gavaskar said, "I don't think there will be any medal given. T Dilip gives those after a match.”
“This is what was really very, very disappointing. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a very good fielder but he hasn't been able to hold on to anything this time," Gavaskar added, while pinpointing at Jaiswal.
While the Men in Blue aim to put a collective show and restrict the English side, Ollie Pope (100* off 131) will hope to convert his hundred to a double hundred with Harry Brook (0* off 12) alongside him on the crease. With 209/3 after 49 overs at Stumps on Day 2, England trail by 262 runs.
