The Men in Blue are currently taking on England in the first Test of the highly-anticipated Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley, Leeds. With the first two days of the opening Test offering some brilliant game, it also saw four batters breach the three-figure mark. After being put to bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal went onto score his first hundred in debut innings in England.
Skipper Shubman Gill also starred, scoring a well-made 147 during his 227-ball stay at the crease, becoming the only fourth Indian player to hit a century on Test captaincy debut. Thereafter, star Indian wicketkeeper-batter and vice-captain of the Test team, Rishabh Pant went on to score a century.
Why Rishabh Pant performs a backflip celebration after scoring a century?
While all three of them had their moments on the field, it was Rishabh Pant whose celebration became a talking point. Soon after reaching his seventh Test hundred, Rishabh Pant once again brought in the somersault celebration. While this was only the second instance that he performed a backflip, his earlier came in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
On Saturday, June 21, as soon as he completed his seventh Test hundred, reaching the mark in 146 balls with a six off Shoaib Bashir’s over, he brought out the unique celebration. Although, Pant himself has never spoken of his unique style of celebration, but it is often said to be his way of expressing happiness.
Notably, this celebration has come since his recovery from the horrific car accident which kept him away from the game for almost two years. A few also refer to the celebration synchronising with his nickname ‘Spidey’.
