With the first England versus India Headingley Test looking well-poised at the moment, both teams have had their fair share on the field. After putting India to bat first, centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), skipper Shubman Gill (147) and Rishabh Pant (134) helped India put 471 runs on the board. After Gill’s dismissal, the visitors lost seven wickets at only 41 runs.
But out of all of it, Rishabh Pant’s ton grabbed the attention of all which was followed by the wicketkeeper-batter bringing in a somersault celebration. Just when Pant brought his seventh Test hundred, former India cricketer and one of the greats of the game, Sunil Gavaskar was seen praising the 27-year-old.
Sunil Gavaskar hails Pant’s knock with “suberp, superb, superb” remarks
Gavaskar, who has been a firm critic of the sport, was commentating during Pant’s knock. In the morning session on day two, the left-handed batter reached the three-figure score in 146 balls after hitting Shoaib Bashir for a six over cow corner region. Soon after this, the Indian legend lauded Pant with the shouts of “superb, superb, superb.”
His comments came after a few months back Sunil Gavaskar slammed Rishabh Pant on air during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He was caught shouting “stupid, stupid, stupid” after the wicketkeeper-batter threw his wicket away against Australia in the Melbourne Test.
Coming back to the ongoing Test match, with a hundred on Saturday, June 21, Pant surpassed MS Dhoni for most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test cricket after leveling it in September 2024 when he scored a 109 against Bangladesh.
