Former India player and Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh has raised questions on the Test retirement of star players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. In May 2025, both batting maestros brought the curtain down on their red-ball careers after serving the side for a long time. Both players were receiving criticism for their underwhelming batting performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Reacting to their decisions, Yograj has given his views.
The 67-year-old stressed that both veterans had five years of Test cricket left in them. He also went on to say that the baton wasn’t handed over to the Shubman Gill by Rohit Sharma but thrown at the 25-year-old. "Virat and Rohit shouldn't have retired from Tests. I told Rohit to get up at 5 AM and run for 20 km to keep himself fit. Virat and Rohit can still play for another 5 years in Test cricket. They should have played. They should be there to see that the baton is passed to the youngsters, just like Sourav Ganguly did. The baton has not been passed, it has been thrown to Gill," said Yograj in a conversation with InsideSport.
Rohit Sharma’s Test record in England
Rohit Sharma’s Test record is exceptional in England. Back in 2021-22, when India levelled the five-match series by a 2-2 margin, Rohit was the most successful batter for the team with 368 runs in eight innings of four matches. However, despite this positive fact, Rohit decided to end his Test career.
However, Team India will look to move forward to be at their best in the upcoming five-match series against England. The first Test will be played in Leeds from June 20. At this venue, India have won only two games in their seven outings. Their last victory at Headingley came in 2002 under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership.
