Portugal forward Diogo Jota left his fans and sports world in shock and misery as the talented player’s life ended after his tragic car accident that took place in Spain’s Zamora on Thursday, July 3. Jota was accompanied by his brother Andre Silva, who also lost his life in the unfortunate accident. Diogo married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso in June 2025 and he is survived by his wife and three children. Before marrying his partner, Jota was part of Portugal's squad that won the UEFA Nations League 2025. His last appearance was in the match between Portugal and Spain in Munich played on June 8.

On Jota’s unfortunate demise, the sporting fraternity has stepped up to mourn his accident. From football, legend and his teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, former England footballer Jamie Carragher, UEFA, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City dropped posts through their social media handles. His club Liverpool also put a post for him through their social media handle. “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” with the picture of the 28-year-old.

Former Team India player Yuvraj Singh has also paid tribute to Jota. He took to X and penned a long note. His post read, “Hard to believe Diogo is gone! He was a baller who brought the game to life every time he touched the pitch! One of the finest ever. Condolences to the family, can't imagine the pain of losing not just Diogo, but his brother in the same accident. Strength to all who knew and loved them. @DiogoJota18 #diogojota.” Besides Yuvraj, IPL franchises took to social media and expressed their misery after the loss of precious life.

On Jota’s sudden death, Wimbledon will also mellow on their stern dress-code guideline as the in charge of the competition will allow players to don black armbands in the matches to be played on July 4. NBA legend LeBron James also condoled Jota’s death. He took to X and wrote, “My prayers goes out to his loved ones during this time! May you all be guided and protected! YNWA JOTA!!”
