Team India Test skipper Shubman Gill has surpassed legendary Virat Kohli after the former crossed his individual 150-run mark against England in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston. Riding on Gill’s stunning ton, India ended their first day on high with a score of 310/5. On the second day of the Test, Gill continued his brilliant work and exuded confidence with his bat again. The star player completed his 150 in 263 deliveries and broke into record books. Gill (25 years, 297 days), with this innings, he has become the youngest Asian skipper in history to hit multiple hundreds in English conditions.
Besides Gill, former South Africa captain Graeme Smith is another batter to score multiple centuries as captain from the touring side in England. During the Protea side’s 2003 tour of England, Smith racked up two hundreds in five matches. Shubman Gill broke another notable record with his latest knock. The current India Test captain struck his first 150+ Test score at the age of 25 and outdistanced Kohli, who crossed his first 150+ red-ball score at the age of 26, with his 169-run innings against Australia in the Melbourne Test played in December 2014.
Ravindra Jadeja missed the opportunity to rack up his fifth Test hundred
Ravindra Jadeja, who looked solid with his bat in the ongoing Test, missed the opportunity to score his fifth red-ball hundred. The southpaw was befuddled by Josh Tongue’s bouncer and lofted the ball which eventually landed in stumper Jamie Smith’s hands. Jadeja’s last Test ton came against England in his home town Rajkot in February 2024.
Following the first session, India accumulated 109 runs which took their score 419/6. As of writing, Gill (unbeaten 168 off 288) and Washington Sundar (unbeaten one off 11) are at the crease. Team India supporters will expect Gill to complete his maiden Test double ton.
