On July 4, 2009, former United States (US) tennis star Serena Williams defeated her elder sister Venus Williams in the women’s singles final at SW19, to clinch the coveted Wimbledon title with 7-6(7-3), 6-2. Both sisters played extraordinarily to advance to the finals. Venus was the reigning champion as she became the winner of the Wimbledon 2008 after getting the better of her sibling Serena in the final. In 2009, Serena and Venus clashed against each other for the eighth time in a Grand Slam final and the former succeeded in seeking her revenge for the Wimbledon 2008 final loss.

In the title match, Serena got a tough fight from her sister Venus in the opening set as the former could win it by a 7-6 scoreline in the tie-breaker. However, in the second set, the younger sibling looked ruthless and completely outclassed Venus to record a 6-2 triumph. It was Serena’s third Wimbledon title victory in the singles’ category. Before Wimbledon 2009, she also won the Australian Open title in the year. Overall, it was her 11th Grand Slam title.

Serena’s dominance against Venus in Grand Slam finals

Before the Wimbledon 2009 final, Serena dominated Venus in the Grand Slam finals. Both played against each other for the first time in the US Open final in 2001 in which Venus held her nerves and emerged victorious. However, after that win, Venus lost five Grand Slam finals in a row to her younger sister.

In the 2008 Wimbledon, Venus beat Serena for the first time in Grand Slam finals in seven years. The next year, Serena utilised her sensational form and avenged her previous edition’s Wimbledon’s final loss, winning her 14th Grand Slam title. In 2017, both sisters squared off against each other for the last time in a Grand Slam final, with their match in the 2017 Australian Open. Serena again emerged triumphant. In 2022, Serena retired from tennis after her 27-year professional career.
