Team India wicketkeeper-batter and vice-captain Rishabh Pant, along with his skipper Shubman Gill, looked in sensational touch with his bat on the first day of the opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Leeds. Both have stitched a 138-run stand together for the fourth wicket so far. Gill ended the day’s play after scoring an unbeaten 127 off 175 while Pant also looked confident and notched up unbeaten 65 runs after consuming 102 balls. Both will look to take India’s innings ahead confidently on the second day of the contest.
As day 1 headed towards its conclusion, Shubman received a warning from Pant when the former played a shot in the air against spinner Shoaib Bashir. Pant, who was standing at the non-striker’s end, advised his captain to play low shots. "Yeh aa jaata, uth gaya. (Keep it down if you're stepping out. That one went high, could've been caught)," said Pant.
Rishabh Pant expected to convert his fifty into a century in first Test
Rishabh Pant, who completed his 16th Test fifty on the opening day, will strive to convert his half-century into a ton. If he succeeds in doing that, he will join Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who have already racked up hundreds in the game. Thus far, all Team India batters have looked disciplined.
Only debutant Sai Sudharsan failed to be effective with his bat. Playing his maiden Test, Sudharsan got dismissed on a four-ball duck. Jaiswal, who is playing his first Test in England, bettered his numbers against the English side as he notched up his third red-ball ton. Overall, it was his fifth century in the longest format of the sport. The southpaw concluded his knock after scoring 101 off 158. His innings was studded by 17 boundaries (16 fours and a maximum).
