On June 22, 2019, Team India hammered Afghanistan by 11 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 game played at The Rose Bowl. Batting first after winning the toss, the Men in Blue posted a total of 224/8 on the board. Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav shone with their bats and scored 67 (63) and 52 (68) respectively. Afghan spinners Mohammad Nabi (2/33 in nine overs), Rashid Khan (1/38 in 10 overs) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1/26 in 10 overs) bowled exceptional spells to restrict India on a low score.
Following the target, the Afghan side lost their opener Hazratullah Zazai early, but they stitched crucial partnerships to slowly but surely get close to the target. In the 29th over of the innings, Jasprit Bumrah stepped up for India and delivered the double blow to the Afghan side, who were at a score of 106 only. The pacer got rid of both settled batters Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi. In the crunch situation, Nabi stepped up with his bat and produced a fine innings from his bat for Afghanistan. 
In the penultimate over of the second innings, Gulbaddin Naib’s team required 21 runs to beat India for the first time in One-Day internationals (ODI), but Bumrah held his nerves and splurged only five runs.
Mohammed Shami clinched a hat-trick to help India emerge triumphant
In the final over of the match, when Afghanistan needed 16 to win the game, Team India speedster Mohammed Shami showcased his mettle and bagged a hat-trick. He got the better of Mohammad Nabi, Aftab Alam, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman on consecutive deliveries.
Shami became the second India bowler to grab a hat-trick in Cricket World Cups and the Men in Blue registered a 11-run win and solidified their chances for the knockouts of the tournament. Bumrah, who bowled a frugal spell of 2/39 (10 over), became the player of the match (POTM).
