Hours after Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced retirement from ODI cricket, South Africa wicketkeeper-batter, Heinrich Klaasen announced retirement from international cricket. The decision from the Protea international came on Monday, June 2 after he culminated his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 edition with Sunrisers Hyderabad in May end.
Taking to Instagram, Klaasen began his post which read, “It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with.”

The big-hitter of the ball, Klaasen, who earlier put down curtains to his Test career on Janury 8, 2024, further recalled his time in international cricket. “From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country and it was everything that I have worked for and dreamed about as a young boy. I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life,” his statement read.
The 33-year-old further added that he wishes to spend some quality time with his family and support his national side from the sidelines. “I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so. I will always be a big Proteas supporter and would like to thank everyone that supported me and my teammates during my career,” he concluded.
The right-handed batter, who is known from belligerent six-hitting concluded his international career, having played four Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is. While he has only scored 104 runs in the longest format, he puts down curtains to his white-ball cricketing career with 2141 runs in 50-over format and 1000 runs in T20Is.
