Heather Knight, the former England women’s cricket team captain, was visibly struggling with a hamstring issue during the third T20I of the three-match series against West Indies on Monday, May 26. Just a few days later, after the subsequent MRI scan, it was revealed that she had suffered a “significant tendon injury” in her right hamstring, due to which she has been ruled out of the remainder of the English summer of cricket.
During the third T20I, which England won convincingly, to clinch the series 3-0 against West Indies, Heather Knight scored an unbeaten 66 off 47 balls while facing a hamstring issue in the latter part of her innings. It led to her not taking the field during England’s defence of 144-run total, which they successfully did by restricting West Indies to 127/8 in their allotted 20 overs despite an exceptional 71 off 54 from Hayley Matthews.
l've got the World Cup in my sights: Heather Knight
With her serious injury, Heather Knight will not be playing the three-match ODI series against West Indies apart from India’s visit to the English shores in June and July, followed by the Women’s Hundred in the month of August. As per the official statement of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the 34-year-old will be further assessed by the medical team of the English women’s cricket team before they determine the next rehabilitation steps.
It has led to her selection in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in September this year hanging in the balance. Moreover, in her Instagram post, she was quite emotional about her injury and said, “It was fun whilst it lasted… Unfortunately l've damaged my right hamstring tendon pretty badly and I'll miss the rest of the international summer and the hundred, but l've got the World Cup in my sights.”
“Pretty gutted, it's not the best timing, but I'll be doing everything I can to get back asap. I've been here before and I'll face this head on like all the challenges l've had in my career,” she added.
