The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce the Indian squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, set to be played from June 20 till August 4. However, the Indian cricket board will have a daunting task before naming the squad for the highly-anticipated series, several reports have made startling claims.

While the BCCI will have to ponder on Rohit Sharma’s replacement at the helm, they will be hoping for a versatile option as Virat Kohli’s replacement, who has also put down curtains to his illustrious Test career on Monday, May 12. While the squad is likely to be announced later this month, reports have added that Mohammed Shami is unlikely to be picked for the series, despite being one of the key pacers in the side.

Mohammed Shami not an obvious pick; Arshdeep Singh likely to be named in Indian squad

However, there hasn’t been any clarity on any cricketer thus far, several reports have claimed that Shami remains doubtful, seeing him struggle with injuries. A source close to BCCI informed, as quoted by TOI, “As of now, Shami isn’t an automatic pick. It’s been months since he has come back to international cricket but he has barely been in rhythm.” “While IPL performances are not usually considered while picking India teams, Shami is struggling to finish his run-up and the ball is not carrying to the wicketkeeper like it used to before his Achilles tendon injury after the 2023 ODI World Cup. He invariably goes back to the dressing room after a short spell for recovery,” the source added.

Several reports have also claimed that Arshdeep Singh is being looked upon for the upcoming series, whereas Harshit Rana will be a part of India A side. A journalist named Rohit Juglan took to X to share an update on Arshdeep, writing, "Break - Arshdeep Singh is all set to board that flight for England Harshit Rana will travel with India A - Shami's injuries are big concern 50/50 chances - Pant will be the Vice captain."
