A nine-year-old chess prodigy Aarit Kapil came close to defeating world number one Magnus Carlsen in a major online platform organised by ''Early Titled Tuesday' tournament. However, in the end, the nine-year-old had to settle for a draw. With the stalemate result, Carlsen avoided humiliation. The 34-year-old recently hit the headlines for banging the table after recording a defeat against India’s Grandmaster and reigning World Chess Champion Gukesh Dommaraju at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament. However, Carlsen went on to win the tournament and defended his title successfully.

Weeks after the famous achievement, when Carlsen took on India’s Under-9 national champion, he saw himself under pressure. The young kid took Carlsen on the verge of defeat but with a few seconds left, he failed to seize the opportunity which ended the match in a stalemate. Aarit participated in the game from his hotel room in Georgia. Aarit is in Georgia for the Under-10 world Championship. The nine-year-old has bagged victories in his initial two games and he will play his next match on June 25.

Aarit Kapil is a rising star in chess. He has grabbed a lot of headlines due to his prowess and performance. Last year, he beat the 66-year-old Grandmaster Raset Ziatdinov in the ninth round of the KIIT International Open Tournament. With this unprecedented success, he became the youngest Indian to get the better of a Chess Grandmaster.

Talking about Carlsen, he will be next seen in marquee tournaments such as the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz events in Zagreb, Croatia, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam in Las Vegas, and the Esports World Cup to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Besides these competitions, he is highly likely to record his presence in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League - Season 3 and the FIDE World Blitz and Rapid Championships in 2025.
