Ahead of the upcoming second Test in the five-match series, Team India has a lot of points to address. While their fielding has been under radar since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, it continues to be in the eyes after several dropped catches hogged limelight in the opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
As many as eight catches were dropped during the Headingley Test and the majority of the catches were dropped by opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, which eventually conspired against them as England claimed the series opener by five-wicket margin. This poor run on the field of Jaiswal got him into the radar of several cricketers and as a result, the Men in Blue is planning to demote him in the position.
We’ll give Jaiswal a break from catching in gully: Ryan ten Doeschate confirms
Addressing on the fielding effort after worrying signs in the first Test, Team India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate was inquired on the same. "I think we always want depth in the catching department. In England, you're always going to have four catchers at some stage in the game. Yashasvi has been a very good catcher for us. We want to manage his confidence,” he began.
“There's also an argument for the short leg being a very important position, particularly if we are going to play two spinners. We want to pick more guys in that position. So I think the more versatile we are as a fielding unit, the more guys can do more jobs. Maybe just give Yashasvi a break from catching in the gully for a little while. His hands are quite sore. We want to get his confidence back up," he added. With a confirmation on change of field position for Jaiswal, it has to be seen where he’ll be placed now.
