On Sunday, July 6, the Indian cricket team etched history as they defeated England by 336-run margin to level the ongoing five-match series 1-1. After earlier going down by five wickets in the opening Test at Headingley, Leeds, the Shubman Gill & Co. bounced back in style, dominating the English side across all departments to register an emphatic win.
For the unversed, Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl first, thus inviting India to bat. On the back of a double century from Shubman Gill (269 off 387) and 80-plus scores from Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89), India posted 587 runs in the first innings. Thereafter, on the back of a six-wicket haul from Mohammed Siraj and a four-fer from Akash Deep, India restricted England to 407, thus taking a 180-run lead.
Gill continued to lead from the front, playing yet another century knock, along with fifty-plus scores from KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja to add 427 to their first innings lead. In reply, they posted a mammoth target of 608 for England to chase. For the hosts, Jamie Smith played a gritty knock of 88, but the English side fell at 271, courtesy a six-fer this time from Akash Deep.
India continues to sit at fourth place after dominating 336-run win at Edgbaston
While the win was special from all perspectives for the Indian cricket team, it did not make much significance when it comes to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings. After a victory in two matches so far in the 2025-27 Test cycle, Team India continues to sit at the fourth place with 12 points and a point percentage of 50.00.
England, who have had a similar result so far in the WTC 2025-27 cycle, sit at third place. The 2023 Test champions, Australia continue to dominate the standings with 24 points and a point percentage of 100 as they have won both the Test matches they have played so far. Sri Lanka, however, have occupied the second place with a win and a draw from their two Test matches. They have 16 points in their kitty and boost of a point percentage of 66.67.
