Real Madrid kickstarted their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 campaign with a 1-1 draw against the Saudi Arabian side, Al-Hilal on June 19 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. In their tournament opener, the Real Madrid missed the services of their star player, Kylian Mbappe. However, the club has now revealed the reason behind his absence from the crucial fixture.

It is to be noted that prior to their match against Al-Hilal, the France captain was absent from Tuesday’s training due to high fever, followed by his absence from the 1-1 draw result. The club in a statement confirmed updates of Mbappe’s omission, revealing that he has been hospitalised due to severity of the illness.

Kylian Mbappe hospitalised with acute gastroenteritis

The French forward is said to have suffered from an acute case of gastroenteritis, leading to his admission in the hospital. "Our player Kylian Mbappe is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment," said Los Blancos in a statement.

Gastroenteritis is a common infection that causes vomiting and diarrhoea-like symptoms. With the club revealing the reason behind the 26-year-old’s absence, they did not provide a timeline of Mbappe’s return. Speaking of the France international, Mbappe has been sensation since joining Madrid from PSG on a free transfer.

Mbappe finished as the European Golden Shoe winner in his first season at Real Madrid with 31 goals in La Liga, but the Los Blancos finished the season without a major trophy. While his availability remains under cloud, the Xabi Alonso-managed side, who are placed in Group H, will next take on Mexican side Pachuca in Charlotte on Sunday, June 22.
