Team India’s red-ball captain Shubman Gill, who succeeded Rohit Sharma at helm after the latter announced retirement from Test cricket in May 2025, has finally risen to fame. Leading his first Test series, that too in England, Shubman Gill went on to etch history as he brought his second consecutive century and third in the ongoing tour of England.
It is to be noted that Shubman Gill scored 147 off 227 balls in the first innings of the opening Test in Leeds. He then went on to score a double century (269 off 387) in the first innings of the second Test, followed by 161 off 162 in the second innings in Birmingham, thus crossing the 500-run aggregate in only fourth innings.
Virat Kohli shares first message to his compatriot Shubman Gill
Seeing Gill stand up on the occasion, his teammate and veteran of the game, Virat Kohli took to Instagram story to share some kind words. Seeing Shubman Gill succeed Kohli at number four batting position in the longest format, Kohli wrote, “Well played star boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this.”
It is to be noted that the 25-year-old Punjab batter struck 21 boundaries during his 161 off 162, following his first innings feat. During his stay in the second Test, Gill also recorded the second-highest individual aggregate in a single Test match, combining his tally to 430 runs. He sits only behind England’s Graham Cooch, who amassed 456 runs against India at Lord’s in 1990.
He also became the only second batter t score over 150 runs in both innings of a Test, joining Australia’s legend Allan Border, who achieved the feat with scores of 150 and 153* in Lahore in 1980.
