Vaibhav Suryavanshi grabbed a lot of eyeballs when he donned the role of bowler during the first One-Day International (ODI) match between India U-19 and England U-19 at County Ground, Hove. In the 24th over of the contest, he was brought into the attack by skipper Ayush Mhatre. Bowling one over, he gave away only two runs. Suryavanshi, who bowled for the first time, was seen spinning the ball away from the right-hander with the left-arm. India’s bowling unit looked disciplined and got bundled out on 174. Off-spinner Kanishk Chouhan picked up a three-wicket haul and emerged as the leading wicket-taker. Leg-break spinner Mohamed Enaan also grabbed two wickets.

Rocky Flintoff also notched up a half-century and emerged as the highest run-getter for England. Opener Isaac Mohammed also scored 42 runs. Pursuing the low target, skipper Ayush Mhatre, along with Suryavanshi, built a 71-run stand for the opening wicket. Suryavanshi took England’s bowling attack to the cleaners and smashed 48 off 19. His innings was studded with three fours and five maximums. In the lower-middle-order, wicket-keeper batter Abhigyan Kundu also scored unbeaten 45 with four fours and a maximum. India eventually bagged a six-wicket win.

India will look to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series

India will next take on England in the second ODI in Northampton on June 30. Mhatre will look to spearhead from the front to help the side take a comfortable lead. Following the five-match series, India will also confront the hosts in a couple of Tests.

This competition is a golden opportunity for youngsters such as Mhatre and Suryavanshi to showcase their skills. Both players looked sensational in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Suryavanshi also became the Indian batter with the fastest ton in the league, slamming a 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Jaipur earlier this year.
