Team India One-Day International (ODI) captain Rohit Sharma has congratulated Sri Lanka veteran Angelo Mathews on the latter’s Test retirement. With Sri Lanka hosting Bangladesh for two Tests, Mathews has registered his presence in the former’s playing XI for the last time as he announced his retirement from the longest format of the game on May 25. The 38-year-old, last month, took to his social media handle and revealed that he will don Sri Lanka whites for the last time against the Bangla side in a Test match from June 17 to 21 in Galle.
On the notable occasion, Rohit dedicated a video to recognise Angelo Mathews’ efforts for Sri Lanka’s Test team. “Hey Angie, congratulations on your fantastic Test career. Over the years, we had really good battles from our U19 days till now. You have been a true servant to your nation and I am pretty sure everyone back at home appreciates what you have done for your country,” said Rohit in his clip.
Mathews has posted Rohit’s congratulatory message through the former’s Instagram handle. Both veterans saw themselves against each other several times while playing on the field. Back in 2006, both Rohit and Mathews confronted each other for the first time during the ICC Under-19 World Cup game between India and Sri Lanka held at the Galle International Stadium.
Angelo Mathews Test numbers
Angelo Mathews broke into Test cricket in July 2009, with his appearance in the game between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Galle. The right-handed batter has played 119 Tests for Sri Lanka and scored 8167 runs with 16 hundreds and 45 fifties in 210 innings. With these numbers, he is the third-highest run-getter for his national side in the longest form of the sport.
After the Test retirement, the 38-year-old will look to make a comeback in Sri Lanka’s T20 International (T20I) team. He hasn’t played any T20I game for Sri Lanka since June 2024. He will aim to win a spot in Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup 2026 side. Sri Lanka will co-host the massive T20I event with India.
