After leading Punjab Kings to the final of IPL after 11 years, Shreyas Iyer now led SoBo Mumbai Falcons to the final of the ongoing edition of the T20 Mumbai 2025. In Falcons’ last league game ahead of the semi–final, Iyer played as an impact player with Angkrish Raghuvanshi taking charge as captain. Raghuvanshi has also played in Iyer’s captaincy for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 and won the title in his captaincy.
Now, after one year, when Raghuvanshi shared the dressing room with Shreyas Iyer again, he referred to his former IPL captain as ‘Sarpanch Sahab’ while announcing the playing XI during the toss against Aakash Tigers MWS at Wankhede Stadium on June 8. “ Our Sarpanch Sahab is the impact player today” Raghuvanshi said at the toss.
How did Shreyas Iyer got the title of Sarpanch Sahab?
Notably, Shreyas Iyer got the title of ‘Sarpanch Sahab’ by the fans after he was appointed as captain of Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2025. He was picked by the franchise for a whopping amount of INR 26.75 crore in the mega auction. It turned out to be a great pick as Iyer not only led Punjab to the playoffs after 11 years but also helped the franchise to get into the final after 2014
Shreyas Iyer also led from the front with his performance with the bat. He amassed 604 runs in 17 matches in IPL 2025 at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07. With this, Iyer became the first captain to lead three different franchises to an IPL final. However, PBKS ended up losing the final by just six runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3.
