The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 must be over, but it gave immense entertainment, not only on the field, but also on the sidelines. With Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) reigning victorious and lifting their maiden title, Punjab Kings (PBKS) also made it to their first IPL final in 11 years, a remarkable feat in itself.
However, they might have gone very close to their maiden IPL title, but failed to lift it as they went down by mere six runs in the summit clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 3. While the tournament saw the rise of PBKS, Shreyas Iyer became the first captain to take three IPL franchises into the final after he led KKR to their title triumph in 2024.
Shreyas Iyer officially joins white-ball captaincy race: Sources
With Iyer in his prime form, there have been several eyes on him, including the ones sitting in the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) office as well as the selection committee. Although, the 30-year-old might have missed a place in India’s Test squad for the upcoming England series, but sources close to the development have revealed that he is definitely one of the contenders to take over India’s captaincy in white-ball cricket.
According to a report in The Indian Express, Iyer’s rise as a captain in IPL as well as domestic cricket has been considered a big takeway and might him see lead the Men in Blue down the line. "Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can't keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” a official said, as quoted by The Indian Express.
It is to be noted, while Shubman Gill was named India’s Test captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Suryakumar Yadav leads India in T20Is whereas Rohit Sharma continues to don the captain’s hat in the 50-over format.
