Team India are high on confidence after beating England in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy held at Birmingham by 336 runs. Their endeavours will be to play a fierce brand of cricket under their captain Shubman Gill and take the winning momentum ahead at the iconic Lord’s, where the third match will be played. Before the second Test, there was a question whether India would be able to break Edgbaston hoodoo as they never won any red-ball game before the match played from July 3 to 7. India skipper Gill led the side from the front and guided the team to a colossal victory.
Like Edgbaston, India’s overall Test record isn’t impressive at Lord’s as well. At the distinguished venue, India have played 19 Tests in which the side could win only three while 12 matches ended in England’s favour. Four matches ended in a stalemate. However, India will be relieved with the fact that their record has bettered in the 21st century as they have won two games in six outings since 2002. In the last game between India and England at the illustrious ground in 2021, it was the visitors that emerged triumphant by 151 runs. Discussing more, SportsTiger has revisited India’s three memorable Test victories at Lord’s.
List of India’s Test wins at Lord’s in London
3. Kapil Dev’s potent bowling guided India to a maiden Test win at Lord’s in 1986
In 1986, when India won the three-match Test series in England under Kapil Dev’s captaincy, the former started their red-ball campaign with a convincing five-wicket win at Lord’s. After gaining a 47-run lead in the first innings, India witnessed their captain Kapil stepping up with the ball and wreaking havoc on the hosts.
Kapil’s magnificent bowling show forced England to capitulate on 180 in the second innings. He registered 4/52 figures in his 22-over spell. India chased down the target of 135 runs with five wickets in hand and Kapil became the player of the match (POTM) for his fine bowling performance.
2. Ishant Sharma’s extraordinary bowling performance helped India win in 2014
In 2014, India won their Test match at Lord’s after 28 years. Under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, the visitors played quality cricket for five days and bagged a 95-run win. Defending the target of 319, skipper Dhoni required his bowlers to showcase a gallant bowling performance. Ishant Sharma held his nerves and wrecked the home side’s batting unit. The pacer grabbed 7/74 figures in his 23 overs and helped India walk back as winners. Ishant’s bowling figures are also the best by any India bowler at Lord’s. His scintillating performance also got him POTM.
1. India registered a 151-run win with KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj’s masterclass in 2021
India’s last Test meeting with England at Lord’s happened in 2021 and the former side was playing under Virat Kohli’s fierce captaincy. KL Rahul played a remarkable innings of 129 in the first innings and helped India put up a very good score of 364. However, England followed the total with courage and replied with 391 runs. England’s response could’ve become bigger, but Mohammed Siraj picked up 4/94 figures in his 30 overs along with Ishant Sharma and folded the hosts with only 27-run lead.
In the second innings, when England were tasked to chase 272, Siraj again emerged as a nightmare for the hosts. This time, he bagged another four-wicket haul and played a crucial role in bundling out England at 120 only. Rahul got POTM for his superb century in the first innings.
