Shardul Thakur, who played for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) under Rishabh Pant’s captaincy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, has talked about the 27-year-old and Shubman Gill, who will be seen handling Team India’s Test captaincy mantle in the upcoming five-match Test series in England. Shardul, who played his last international Test game in December 2023, will be seen playing under Gill’s leadership in the tour coming ahead. Gill will look to kick off his captaincy stint on a positive note and he will expect support from Pant, who is appointed as his deputy.

Ahead of the crucial assignment, Thakur gave an interview to RevSportz and discussed both Shubman Gill and Pant. He said that Shubman is a composed person while Pant is vivacious. He also claimed that both youngsters are talented. “They both are big players and the future of India for sure. They are very different in character – where Shubman is very serious and calm, a composed kind of person when it comes to the game, and Rishabh is a funny and lively guy. But this again is their USP in their own way. They have contributed to the game on the biggest and most crucial stages, and that makes them very promising players for the future of India,” said Thakur.

Shardul Thakur’s impressive performance in IPL and domestic circuit

Shardul Thakur looked amazing in the 2024-25 domestic season. In the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, he grabbed 35 wickets for Mumbai in 18 innings of nine matches and concluded the tournament as the second-leading wicket-taker for his side. He also did a fine job for LSG in IPL 2025, picking up 13 wickets in 10 contests.

In the upcoming England series, his main role will be to bolster India’s fast-bowling unit. Last time, when India levelled the series in England by 2-2 under Virat Kohli’s leadership, Shardul bagged eight wickets in six innings of three Tests. This time, the 33-year-old will be expected to be more disciplined as he is one of the senior players in the side.
