Just a day after announcing retirement from all formats of international cricket, West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran was named the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI) subsidiary franchise side, the MI New York in the Major League (MLC) 2025. It is to be noted that the wicketkeeper-batter shocked the cricketing world as he called off time from international cricket early on June 10.

Aged 29, Pooran took to his Instagram handle to make this annoucement. While he called it a “very difficult” decision, he concludes his international career having scored over 4000 runs across 61 T20Is and 106 ODIs. Although, a prominent face in the franchise cricket leagues around the world, Pooran will hope to prolong his career there.

Nicholas Pooran named MI New York skipper ahead of MLC 2025

Although, Pooran’s last appearance came in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), he will now don the MI jersey while plying his trade for the New York based franchise in the MLC 2025, which is set to commence from June 13 to July 14.

"Our hero, our ledge, our skipper! Nicholas Pooran – the 29-year-old pocket dynamite, aka the MINY superstar – has been named the MI New York captain ahead of the 2025 season of the Cognizant Major League Cricket. This left-handed wicket-keeper batter is one of the world’s most feared batters going around. At the peak of his powers currently, he’s all set to take us to greater glories under his leadership. He was the highest run-scorer in the 2023 MLC season with 388 runs under his belt. You really don't need to look beyond his 137* at the MLC Final to know that. Can’t wait to relive the same in 2025, Nicky!" read the statement from MI New York.

It is to be noted that Pooran played a pivotal role in New York’s title win in the inaugural edition of MLC. He scored a blistering unbeaten 137 against the then runners-up, Seattle Orcas.
