Manchester United are aiming to host the FIFA Women's World Cup 2035 final at the newly proposed 100,000-seat stadium. The project, costing £2 billion, has also seen Manchester Utd appoint two-time Olympic gold medallist Coe to oversee the operation. As part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to acquire a stake in Manchester United, a key element was deciding whether to construct a new stadium or renovate Old Trafford. After a thorough evaluation, the decision was made to build a new arena. Following this, United revealed concept designs featuring three striking masts called ‘the trident’, an innovative umbrella-like structure, and a large public plaza twice the size of Trafalgar Square.
The FIFA Women's World Cup 2035 will be held across four nations, including the UK. Meanwhile, Coe will play a significant role in the next phase of the project after being appointed Chair-Designate of the Mayoral Development Corporation for the Old Trafford Regeneration. In a statement released by The Sun, Coe said, "I’m delighted that I’ve been asked to be the chair designate of the proposed Old Trafford Mayoral Development Corporation. Throughout my career, I’ve seen the impact that sports-led regeneration can have in strengthening communities and driving economic growth."
Manchester United's football association is preparing to bid before FIFA
According to the BBC, the UK was the sole bidder for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2035 and worked tirelessly to secure the hosting rights. The BBC also mentioned that club insiders believe the new stadium could open well before 2035 and that Ratcliffe’s timeline, announced in March, remains on track. However, they acknowledge that a project of this magnitude could encounter unexpected delays.
As an athlete, Coe won four Olympic medals in the 800m and 1,500m events before retiring in 1990 and later entering politics. He was also crucial in securing London’s bid for the 2012 Olympics, serving as chairman of the campaign committee. United’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, expressed satisfaction with Coe leading the bid. "This is an exciting decade for the region, and we warmly welcome the inclusion of the Old Trafford Regeneration project at the heart of the Greater Manchester Strategy," Omar said.
